Why is my SEPA Instant payment rejected and what should I do?

There could be several reasons why your SEPA Instant payment is rejected. Payments can be declined due to issues on the sender's, the recipient's bank, or the SEPA Instant payment service provider side. If your SEPA Instant payment is rejected, you will be notified in your internet bank or mobile application.

When initiating a payment in Citadele internet bank or mobile app, you can choose whether you want your payment to be processed as a SEPA Instant payment only. If the timing is not crucial, you can also send the payment as a standard SEPA payment (SEPA Credit Transfer). This is done by marking or unmarking the checkbox "I want this payment to be processed as SEPA instant payment only." If you select this option and the payment is unsuccessful, it will be rejected. However, if you do not select this option, an unsuccessful SEPA Instant payment will automatically be sent as a standard SEPA payment. During working days, a standard SEPA payment will reach the beneficiary's account in approximately one hour. During weekends, standard payments are not processed and will be sent to the beneficiary bank on the next working day. Here are the main reasons why an Instant payment can be rejected:

  • System Error: Payments can be rejected if there is a system error or if the payment system is temporarily unavailable.
  • Incorrect Account Information: If the account number or other details provided are incorrect or do not match the recipient's bank records, the payment can be rejected.
  • Account Restrictions: The recipient's account may have restrictions that prevent it from receiving instant payments. This could be due to the account being closed, frozen, or not set up to accept SEPA instant payments. There could also be restrictions on your account (e.g., financial restrictions such as debt recovery and other legal financial obligations) that prevent you from making SEPA Instant payments.
  • Beneficiary Bank Instructions: Sometimes, the beneficiary bank may have instructions to reject payments from certain accounts, originators, or via specific payment schemes.
  • Compliance and Regulatory Issues: Payments can also be rejected due to compliance with regulatory requirements, such as anti-money laundering (AML) checks or sanctions.

If you encounter a rejected SEPA Instant payment, it is advisable to try sending the payment as a standard SEPA payment.
